Riding the Weight Loss Elephant

8 Mar

Imagine that you are sitting on top of an elephant.  You know that your desired destination is to the right, but the elephant is used to walking somewhere on the left.  You are the rider of the elephant and may think that you’re in charge, but you know that if the elephant really wants to go to the left instead of the right, there’s not much you can do to stop him.  Or is there?

This is what weight loss is to a lot of us.  It seems like an insurmountable problem cannot be remedied simply.  Or can it?

I’m currently reading a book titled Switch by Chip Heath and Dan Heath.  Even though I’ve only read the first 5% of the book on my Kindle, I think it’s going to have some interesting tidbits that I can pass on to my readers.

Your weight loss may seem like an impossible insolvable problem, but it’s not.  Let’s learn about how to steer this elephant together.

P.S.  If you’ve read the book, let me know.  If not and you’re a reader, check it out.

Prescription for Success and Disaster

Little Changes

I’ve often encouraged people to make little changes toward a healthier lifestyle.  It may mean taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking outside for five minutes during your lunch break, or drinking one less soda per day.  Over time, these changes can add up to some pretty significant weight loss.

However, little changes toward an unhealthier lifestyle can work in the same way.  They may take form in an extra soda here and there, donuts at the office, and an overabundance of slacking off on the exercise.

Today, my slide went toward the bad when I met with my life group at McDonald’s.  We had a great meeting and the kids loved the Play Place, but I must admit that I did not choose the healthiest meal.  I slid toward the unhealthy with my Angus Burger, fries, and soda.  I knew that there were healthier choices there, but I just didn’t choose them.

I’m going to try my best to have a healthier day tomorrow.

Hello, everyone.   Have you ever been tempted to overeat in stressful situations?  Man, I have.  One day a couple of years ago, I made a wrong way on the Westbank in New Orleans.  Before I knew it, I was an hour late for work and my stress level was through the roof.  I pulled into a gas station because I was running low.  I filled up with gas, but I also filled up with a fried Hubig’s pie and the largest Coke I could find!

I know that everyone is not a fan of Jillian Michaels, but I thought that what she shared on this blog entry is something that could be very helpful to many of us who are prone to overeat in stressful situations – Check it out by clicking on this link – http://www.everydayhealth.com/fitness-specialist/kick-emotional-cravings-to-the-curb.aspx

How To Drink 64 oz of Water

How To Drink 64 oz of Water

On Sunday, one of my friends asked me, “How is it that you can drink over 100 oz of water in one day?  How can I do the same?”

I thought about it and answered, “I wouldn’t start with 100 oz of water per day.  I would start with 64 oz of water each day.”

“How can you do that?” she asked.

“Well,” I said, “I guess there are many ways to do this, but what worked for me when I was starting out was to drink a 16 oz glass or bottle of water with breakfast, then another at lunch, and another at dinner.  Then drink one more during the day sometime.  Then, before you know it, you’ll be craving water at other times of the day as well.”

“But if I drink that much water, I won’t drink anything else.”

“That’s right,” I answered.  “That’s right.”

Here’s What I Had To Eat Friday:

1 Special K Protein Meal Bar

4 Chicken Strips

3 Teaspoons of Jambalaya

Victoriously Defeating the Day of Temptation

12 Feb

Victoriously Defeating the Day of Temptation

Today, I was determined to not let the extra food around me get the better of me.  For the first half of the day, I endured a package of Frosted Strawberry Pop Tarts within arms length of where I was working.  Here’s a picture of the package:

A couple of times, I even picked up the package and thought, “You know, it can’t be that bad.”  Then I read the nutritional information.

You’ll notice my thumb at the bottom of the picture holding that sugary goodness.  Fortunately, after reading the package label, I refrained from devouring it.

Then, later on, Kathy and I visited a festival within walking distance of our condo.  Here’s a picture of what tempted me there:

At first, I thought that there was no way that I could resist the deep fried twinkie, but then I realized that it wasn’t chocolate dipped.  Even though I was very tempted by the deep fried Oreos, bananas, and pickles, I thought that a jalapeno pretzel would be a better choice.

Here’s What I Had To Eat Friday:

1 Special K Protein Meal Bar

1 Grilled Chicken Salad with Lettuce, Spinach, Cucumbers, Brocolli, and almonds

1 Serving of Almonds

1 Serving of Blueberry Yogurt with fresh blackberries

1 Wheat/Jalapeno Pretzel

2 Slices of Thin Wheat Crust Turkey Pepperoni Pizza with Fat Free Cheese

1 Serving of Fat Free Chocolate Pudding

1 Grapefruit

92 oz of Water

My Exercise Friday:

110 Minutes of Walking

My Supplements Friday:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Men’s Multi-vitamin
