Positive Weigh In

Ok, so last week when I weighed I learned that I had gained 2 lbs.  It was the first time that I had gained weight since the end of July.  So, I tried to do somewhat better this week with my diet and exercise.  I weighed in, even after enjoying some king cake, and discovered that I lost ½ lb this week.  I landed at 179 ½ lbs.  That means that I have 4 ½ lbs to go to reach my goal.  Thanks everyone, for your encouragement.

Here’s What I Had To Eat Today:

1 Special K Protein Meal Bar

1 Chick Fil-A Deluxe Sandwich on a wheat bun

1 order of fries (ok, so I was celebrating)

1 serving of fat free chocolate pudding

2 slice of thin crust whole wheat turkey pepperoni pizza with fat free cheese

90 oz of water

My Exercise Friday:

45 Minutes of Walking

44 Push-Ups

My Supplements Friday:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Men’s Multi-vitamin

Great Weigh In/Getting Close

Getting Close/Great Weigh In

I’m getting close.  This morning when I weighed in, my weight was 177.50 lbs.  It’s hard to believe now that just a few months ago, I was at 226.  Now, I’m only 2.75 lbs away from my goal.  This process has been one of the most rewarding experiences and processes of my life.

Now that I’m nearing my goal, I’m noticing areas on my body that I want to tone even more.  I’ll be working on that as much as I can over the next few weeks and months.  It’s hard to believe that even though I’ve lost a lot of weight that I might still have flabby areas, but it’s true.  I want to tackle them next.

Here’s What I Had To Eat Friday:

1 Special K Protein Meal Bar

1 Large fries

1 Red Delicious Apple with lowfat peanut butter

1 Turkey Sandwich on whole wheat sandwich thins with fat free cheese

1 Fresco Taco

1 Fresco Chicken Soft Taco

1 Hershey’s Kiss (See Dawn, I put it down)

90 oz of water

My Exercise Friday:

70 Minutes of Walking

11 Minutes on the Elliptical Machine

40 Push Ups

My Supplements Friday:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Men’s Multi-vitamin

How Much Exercise Is Really Necessary?

How Much Exercise Is Really Necessary?

I recently saw Michelle Obama on television encouraging children to get at least an hour of exercise or rigorous play every day in order to prevent childhood obesity.  I don’t know much about Michelle Obama, but I do have to applaud her efforts on this one.  You don’t have to be a child development specialist to see that children nowadays are developing quite a bit.  And it’s not just the kids that are expanding horizontally.  It’s my opinion that most adults could stand to engage in an hour or exercise or rigorous play each day as well.  I understand that this is just not possible for many of us, but I think it’s a good goal.

Think about it.  How much healthier would you be if you engaged in an hour or rigorous activity each and every day?

Black Friday Weigh-In

25 Nov

Black Friday Weigh In

This morning I woke up feeling a little fat.  “How terrible,” I said aloud, “to have to weigh in the day after Thanksgiving.”  Slowly, I arose, dressed, and walked to the gym where I weigh in every Friday morning.

I had been told that the best thing to do during vacations and during the holidays is just try to maintain, so I didn’t expect this to be a red-letter day for weight loss.  Especially since yesterday was Thanksgiving.

However, as I weighed, the scale evened out at 186.75, exactly 1 lb lighter than I was last week.  Who would have thought that I could have pigged out on the biggest pig out day of the year and still lose 1 lb.

I was so excited that I ran back to our condo and gave the news to Kathy.

“You make me sick!” was her reply.  “It’s so unfair how much easier it is for guys to lose weight.”

I laughed nervously.  Fortunately, she smiled and started laughing as well.

Here’s what I had to eat today on this Thanksgiving Day:

1 Special K Protein Meal Bar

2 Servings of Mongolian Barbeque

1 Serving of Steamed Pollack

1 Boiled Egg

2 Servings of Mixed Fruit (Grapes, Kiwi, Melon)

1 Serving of Slice Potatoes with Green Peppers

1 Turkey Sandwich on Whole Wheat Sandwich Thins

1 Serving of Tortilla Chips with Salsa

3 medium sized chocolate chip cookies

90 oz of water

Supplements I’ve taken today:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Multi Vitamin

Exercise:

10 Minutes on the Elliptical Machine

50 Minutes of Walking

30 Times on the Chest Press Machine

130 Crunches on the Ab Machine

Quarter Pounder Weigh In

18 Nov

Quarter Pounder Weigh In

Okay, last week was not my normal week.  During that time Kathy and I spent in Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma, we ate a lot more than normal.  Off the top of my head, I remember birthday cake, pizza, brisket, chocolate chip cookies, large slices of ham, molten chocolate cake, pumpkin cheesecake, goat’s milk, goat’s milk cheese, goat’s milk yogurt, pancakes, spaghetti, ice cream, apple pie, buffalo wings, and cavier.  Well, okay, I didn’t have cavier, but I had everything else on the list, plus a lot more.  That, partnered with the lack of consistent exercise, I was certain that I had gained at least five lbs this past week.

However, this morning, I weighed in and realized that I had actually lost ¼ lb since my last weigh in.  I was about to be depressed, but then I realized that I was not just able to maintain my weight over my break, but was still able to lose the same amount of weight that is in the meat to a Quarter Pounder Burger from McDonald’s.  I’ll take it.

In case you’re counting, that means that I am down to 187.75 lbs.  I have 12.75 lbs left to lose in order to meet my goal.  I have lost 38.25 lbs.  This next week is Thanksgiving.  Let’s hope I can maintain and lose at least .75 lbs.  We’ll see.

Here’s what I had to eat yesterday:

1 Special K Protein Meal Bar

1 Club Sandwich

2 Servings of Fresh Fruit (Grapes, Pineapple, Apple, Melon, Cantaloupe)

1 Large Grilled Chicken Salad with Cucumber, Brocolli, Tomato, and Light Dressing

2 Slices of Whole Wheat Toast

1 Serving of Nonfat Strawberry Yogurt with Fresh Blueberries and Blackberries

100 oz of water

Supplements I’ve taken today:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Multi Vitamin

Exercise:

30 Minutes of Walking

100 Crunches on Ab Machine

5 Minutes of Lunges

5 Minutes on Rowing Machine

10 Times on Elevated Ab Machine

10 Count Push-Up Ladder (This is where you do 10 Push-Ups, rest for 30 seconds, do 9 Push-Ups, rest for 30 seconds, do 8 Push-Ups, and so forth until you get down to 1 Push-Up.  So, by the time you finish, you’ve actually done 55 Push-Ups.

2 Cycles on Leg Press (This is where you Press down 8 times slowly on the Leg Press and then Press down 5 times fast.  I did this twice after a previous slow 5 presses.

2 Cycles on Chest Press  (Same as the leg press)

Thanks everyone, for your prayers and support.  Keep it up.

Weekly Weigh In/Rivershack Burger (Boiger)

14 Oct

Weekly Weigh In/Rivershack Burger

I was going to allow myself to sleep late today, but I woke around 6 AM and couldn’t get back to sleep.  So, I rose and made my way to the condo gym to weigh.  I told myself that if I hadn’t lost at least one pound, I wasn’t going to indulge in a burger today.  Fortunately, the scale reported my weight as 195 lbs.

I was excited for two reasons.  First, it meant that I had lost 31 lbs since beginning my weight loss journey.  Second, it meant that Kathy and I were going to the Rivershack Tavern for lunch.

We stepped into the Rivershack a few minutes after Noon.  It was packed.  Obviously, the place is very popular.  Because it’s considered a tavern, smoking is still allowed (Restaurants in Louisiana have banned smoking).  However, because of a fundraiser, all of the ashtrays had been removed today.  I was glad.  I wanted to taste the burger (or “boiger” as they call it), not the smoke.

I ordered the Classic Rivershack Burger with Pepperjack Cheese and Bacon.  The first bite was the best.  As I continued eating, I wondered if I would be able to eat the whole thing.  I scarfed it down within minutes, along with my side order of sweet potato fries.  I didn’t eat much for the rest of the day.

Good burger.  Interesting place.  Wonderful company.  It will be a while before I return though.  Maybe after I’ve lost 51 lbs.

Here’s what I’ve eaten today:

1 Special K Protein Meal Bar

1 Classic Burger with Pepper Jack Cheese and Bacon

1 Side of Sweet Potato Fries

1 Banana

1 Serving of Lowfat Strawberry Kiwi Yogurt

80 oz of water

Supplements I’ve taken today:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Multi Vitamin

Exercise:

10 pushes on Inclined Chest Press Machine

10 pulls on Low Cable Crossover Machine with right hand

10 pulls on Low Cable Crossover Machine with left hand

115 crunches on Ab Machine

92 minutes of walking
