All Good Things

3 Aug

Last night, I spoke with one of my faithful blog readers and she instantly gave me what for.  She said, “I checked your blog and noticed that you haven’t posted anything for three weeks.”  She’s right, and I’m glad that she brought it to my attention.

The fact is, I’ve been meaning to write this posting for the last several days.  It’s now officially been a year since I started the 175by43 blog, dedicated to my journey toward weight loss and physical fitness.  My plan was to write down everything that I ate everyday on the blog and learn fitness tips from those who read my blog and responded.  Over the course the year, I learned quite a lot from a lot of people about proper diet, exercise, and healthy living.  I lost close to 50 lbs. and then leveled out around 185 lbs.

Recently, I’ve been using a free app called loseit to track my caloric intake and exercise output.  Honestly, if I would have found this a year ago, I may have chosen that route instead of the blog.  However, I’ve made many great friends over the course of this year who have helped me on my way to healthy living.  Many of you have cheered me on daily.  Thank you very much.

So, what happens now?  Well, I’ve heard it said “All Good Things Must Come To An End.”  Being a follower of Jesus, I’m not sure that’s always the case, but I do believe that it’s time for the 175by43 blog to come to an end.  So, tonight’s blog posting will be the last posting for this particular blog.

However, I love to write and many of you have expressed to me that you wish that I would continue and expand my repertoire.  So, in the next few days, I’m going to launch my new blog focusing on 4 different topics:  Health and Fitness, Church and Christian Living, Worship and Worship Leadership Issues, and Missions.  You should be able to tell the topic of each blog post based on the title.

Thank you all for helping me through this wonderful year of weight loss.  I hope that it’s meant as much to you as it has to me.

God Bless You,

John

Riding the Weight Loss Elephant

8 Mar

Imagine that you are sitting on top of an elephant.  You know that your desired destination is to the right, but the elephant is used to walking somewhere on the left.  You are the rider of the elephant and may think that you’re in charge, but you know that if the elephant really wants to go to the left instead of the right, there’s not much you can do to stop him.  Or is there?

This is what weight loss is to a lot of us.  It seems like an insurmountable problem cannot be remedied simply.  Or can it?

I’m currently reading a book titled Switch by Chip Heath and Dan Heath.  Even though I’ve only read the first 5% of the book on my Kindle, I think it’s going to have some interesting tidbits that I can pass on to my readers.

Your weight loss may seem like an impossible insolvable problem, but it’s not.  Let’s learn about how to steer this elephant together.

P.S.  If you’ve read the book, let me know.  If not and you’re a reader, check it out.

Prescription for Success and Disaster

Little Changes

I’ve often encouraged people to make little changes toward a healthier lifestyle.  It may mean taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking outside for five minutes during your lunch break, or drinking one less soda per day.  Over time, these changes can add up to some pretty significant weight loss.

However, little changes toward an unhealthier lifestyle can work in the same way.  They may take form in an extra soda here and there, donuts at the office, and an overabundance of slacking off on the exercise.

Today, my slide went toward the bad when I met with my life group at McDonald’s.  We had a great meeting and the kids loved the Play Place, but I must admit that I did not choose the healthiest meal.  I slid toward the unhealthy with my Angus Burger, fries, and soda.  I knew that there were healthier choices there, but I just didn’t choose them.

I’m going to try my best to have a healthier day tomorrow.

Here’s What I Had To Eat Today:

1 Snackwell’s Protein Meal Bar

1 Serving of Fried Rice

1 Serving of Vietnamese Beef

1 Serving of Vietnamese Soup

1 Banana

1 Serving of Nonfat Strawberry Kiwi Yogurt

1 Small Fries

1 Angus Burger

80 oz of water

24 oz of Coca-Cola

My Exercise Today:

50 Minutes of Walking

20 Squats

My Supplements Friday:

1 Men’s Multi-vitamin

Today’s Weigh In

Today’s Weigh In

The past two weeks have been topsy turvy for me regarding my health and fitness.  On one side, I’ve struggled with the food that I’ve eaten including a couple of trips that I’ve taken where my nutrition was not my main concern.  Then, on the other side, I’ve had some of my most intense physical workouts over the past two weeks.

So, after two weeks, I still weigh 179.5.  My wife says I look like I’ve toned a little, so I’m pleased with where I am.

Here’s What I Had To Eat Today:

1 Snackwell’s Protein Meal Bar

1 Ham and Turkey Sandwich on Whole Wheat Sandwich Thins

1 Serving of Nonfat Strawberry Yogurt

½ Serving of Yucca fries

½ Serving of Sweet Plantains

1 Serving of Fried Chicken

1 Serving of Grilled Chicken

2 Corn Tortillas

91 Oz of Water

My Exercise Friday:

40 Presses on Chest Press Machine

65 Minutes of Walking

My Supplements Friday:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Men’s Multi-vitamin
