27 Jun

Today, I had an embarrassing moment at the gym.  I had finished with the elliptical and the chest press and made my way to a machine that I call the vertical weight machine (I’m not sure of it’s real name).  The latter is a machine where you sit and pull down on two handles after adjusting the weight in front of you.  It was my first time using this particular machine so I set it on level two, thinking I would adjust as the day went by.  Filled with confidence, I pulled down on the handles and the weights didn’t budge.  I pulled harder.  No change.  Finally, I pulled as hard as I can and I lifted myself off of my seat.

“Man,” I thought, “Level two is really difficult!”

Then I looked at the handle bar closer.  This is what I saw:

Lose It

23 Jun

This past Monday, a friend of mine told me about a weight loss app called “Lose It.”  It sounded intriguing so I checked it out and I’ve been trying it out since that day.  Basically, you program in your weight and height and the amount of weight you would like to lose by a particular date.  It tells you the amount of calories safe for you to eat each day and still meet your goal.  You enter all of your food consumption and exercise output trying your best to keep it all even.

For the first few days, I managed to keep my caloric intake low.  However, yesterday I was on a staff retreat where I ate entirely too much.  When I looked at the app around 7 PM, I was shocked to see that I was 700 calories over my limit for the day.  It took me 30 Minutes of Walking, 10 minutes of stretching, and 45 Minutes on the Elliptical Machine to burn in off.

I did somewhat better today.  I ended up only 4 calories under my limit.  I’m not sure if I’m going to continue to use the Lose It App or not, but one thing is for sure.  It has certainly kept me on my toes.

Here’s What I Had To Eat Today (Keep in mind that I was on a retreat)

1 Waffle with sugar free syrup

1 Serving of Sugar Free Yogurt

2 Servings of Pork Tenderloin Salad

1 Wheat Dinner Roll

1 Serving of Sugar Free Jello

2 Servings of Coca-Cola

1 McDouble Hamburger

92 Ounces of Water

40 Minutes of Exercise Swimming

80 Minutes of Walking

Weigh In

16 Jun

I weighed in this morning and discovered that I weigh exactly what I did last week: 185!  I couldn’t believe it after a week of getting things in order.  So I responded appropriately:  I ate a lot of food and then I exercised like crazy throughout the day.  Don’t get me wrong, exercise is great, but I had the wrong motives.  Hopefully, I’ll do better tomorrow.

Here’s What I Had To Eat Today:

1 Beef Jerky Stick

1 Large Hamburger from Whole Foods with Fries (and lettuce, tomato, and pickle on a wheat bun)

(I was stuffed)

3 Vegetarian Tacos on Corn Tortillas

1 Serving of Green Beans

1 Serving of Fat Free Yogurt with fresh blueberries

1 Brownie (my wife made them for an outreach tomorrow.  Very good)

Here’s My Exercise For Today:

134 Minutes of Walking

35 Laps in the Pool (About 1 Minute per lap)

10 Minutes on the Elliptical Machine

200 Crunches on the Ab Machine

30 Presses on the Chest Press Machine

10 Times on the Chest Pull Machine

10 Times on the Horizontal Chest Pull Machine

40 Winks 😉

Apple A Day

14 Jun

I’ve heard it said that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.”  I don’t know if that’s true or not, but it is true that eating right, getting plenty of exercise, and living right helps you be a healthier person, thereby keeping the doctor away.  However, it’s time for me to make an appointment with my doctor for my yearly physical.  My physical last year is what got me started on this health kick, so for that I am thankful.  Now, since I’ve been eating healthier, I’m actually ready to see my doctor.  Kind of cool.

Everything I Ate Today:

Snackwell’s Protein Meal Bar

1 Serving of Salad with Taco Seasoning and Vegetables

1/2 Pickle

1/2 Chicken Sandwich

1 Ham Sandwich

1 Red Delicious Apple

My Exercise Today:

75 Minutes of Walking

Exercise with the VooDoo

12 Jun

At least three to four times a week, I go to the exercise room in my condo building.  While there, I often find myself surrounded by these huge guys at least a foot taller and 75 to 100 lbs heavier than I, mostly because of their muscular frames.

The other day, I asked one of them, “Who are you guys?  You’re here all the time.”  That’s when I learned that my exercise partners are the team members of the New Orleans VooDoo Football Team.  Something about them exercising in the same room with me makes me want to work harder.  They don’t know it, but they are part of my exercise accountability team.

Thanks, Voo Doo dudes!

Here’s What I Had To Eat Today:

1 Snackwell’s Protein Meal Bar

98 oz of water

Shock and Awe!

Today, my friend Stephen Suluma sent me a video of myself taken last July before I started trying to lose weight.  I was enormous, extremely enormous.  I couldn’t believe that I ever looked that way.  It gave me the boost that I needed to get serious about meeting my goal for July 31st.  No donuts for me.  Stay away, soda and poptarts!  Where’s the treadmill?

1 Special K Protein Meal Bar

1 Breakfast Burrito

1 Large Grilled Chicken Salad with Broccoli, Cucumber, and Red Pepper

1 Serving of Chips and Salsa

Well, today was the day!  Here’s the deal:

I didn’t make it to 175.  In fact, I actually gained a little weight over the past couple of months.  Right now, I’m at 185 lbs.

So, what am I going to do?  I’m going to extend my time until July 31st, 2012.  That would give me 1 year of getting healthy.

Today, at first, I dropped into the depths of despair, but I later realized that everything’s ok.  I’m still a lot healthier than I was before I started trying to lose weight.

Thanks for reading and encouraging me through this process.  Hopefully, you’ll hang on with me for a few more weeks.

God Bless You All,
