Grapefruit at the B and B

Grapefruit Nutritional Information

Several years ago, Kathy and I stayed at a bed and breakfast where the breakfast was served in courses.  The first course that was brought to everyone was half of a grapefruit.  Mine was delicious and I ate it gladly.  However, at the time, Kathy had not developed a taste for grapefruit (she eats it daily now) so I ate her grapefruit as well.

Before long, our host returned and told everyone at our table (six people in all) that she would bring out the next course once everyone had eaten their grapefruit.

Once she left, two of women across from us, who had not eaten their grapefruit, said, “We don’t know how to tell her that we really don’t like grapefruit.  We’d like for breakfast to continue, but we don’t know what to do.”

I ate their grapefruit halves as well.  So, to celebrate my memory of that day, here’s the nutritional information for a grapefruit per serving:

This story reminds me of one of my first trips to New Orleans, when I was 10 years old. My parents brought me down to see The Phantom of the Opera at the Saenger, and we stayed at the Hyatt. They had no idea that I had been eating grapefruit for years at my grandparents’ house, and were quite shocked when I ordered half a grapefruit with my breakfast one morning. They tried to talk me out of it, but finally gave up. Our waiter found it so funny that he brought me the second half–I ate the whole thing.
