Disappointment/Today’s Weigh In

Today’s weigh in was a disappointment for me.  I was afraid that it would be.  This whole past week, I’ve rushed around from activity to activity not taking care of myself the way that I should.  I’ve allowed myself to eat things in quantities that I knew were unhealthy for me.  I did it all in the name of stress relief, but it ended up biting me today.  For the first time since I started this weigh loss/getting healthy kick at the end of July, I actually ended up gaining weight.  I started the week at 177.75 and ended at 180.

So there it is.  I hope that I haven’t disappointed you all.  Please pray for me as I strive to get back on track starting right here and now.

By the way, the asterisks below denotes the extra food that came my way at church activities or in the office today.  Pray that I can leave it alone this next week.

Here’s What I Had To Eat Friday:

1 Snackwell’s Protein Meal Bar

1 Banana

1 Special K Protein Meal Bar

2 Spicy Meat Pies*

1 Ham Sandwich on Whole Wheat with Lettuce, Spinach, Tomato, Pickles, and Green Pepper.

1 Serving of Mixed Nuts*

1 Slice of King Cake*

5 M & M’s*

102 oz of water

My Exercise Friday:

90 Minutes of Walking

43 Push-Ups  (At least I broke my push-up record)

My Supplements Friday:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Men’s Multi-vitamin

You can do it John! We all have our setbacks, but our shining moments come from how we bounce back! Praying for you strength!

Sorry to hear about your setback but I went back and looked at your calories consumed for the past few months and your calorie intake is only about 1500-1750 per day. This is pretty low given the amount of exercise you perform (on average) each week. If you don’t consume enough calories, your body will think that you are starving and then slow down your metabolism which slows down your weight loss. Even in this “bad week”, you only consumed about 1000-1500 calories (for the whole week) more than you did on any other week. For example, if a pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories, and you gained 2.25 lbs, then you would have consumed 7875.00 calories more than you used this week. Obviously you didn’t consume 7875.00 extra calories this week. So what’s up with the weight gain you might ask?

As I had mentioned in the past, its not the AMOUNT of calories that matter as much as the TYPE of calories that matter more. Specifically, the types of calories you consume cause a hormonal response in your body (insulin, serotonin, blood glucose, etc.) which can increase or decrease your metabolism, help burn or store fat and make you feel hungry faster or feel full longer. Below are some websites that might help you in your weight loss journey.

Here is one of those videos that give you a quick and simple explanation of why its the type of foods you eat that cause weight gain. I’m not endorsing what they are selling but the video is very helpful for what I have been talking about.

There are many more websites and books I can direct you to but after 25 years of trying different diets from the mainstream dietary community of that day, I have gone back to the basics. Eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, good fats and “quality” meats and stay away from “processed foods” in wrappers, fast foods and most grains as much as possible. How foods are processed and how they are raised really affect the nutritional value of your foods. Those foods may marketed as “healthy” or look “healthy” but are nutritionally void and cause major hormonal imbalances. I’m writing this because I don’t want you to make the same mistakes I made. Dennis always preaches that a wise man learns from his mistakes but a wiser man learns from the mistakes of others. May God Bless you in your journey and grant you GOOD HEALTH!

      Chris,
Thanks so much for your comment and for the information. I’ll take some time and review each of the websites and links that you posted. You are certainly right that the types of food that I eat are very important. I think I have slowly let some less than desirable foods creep back into my diet. I’m going to review it and then make some changes.
One thing that I haven’t considered is that some of my extra weight may actually be muscle weight that I’ve added. I have been hitting the weights a little more. We’ll see.
Thanks again for your encouragement. I’ll write back again when I’ve had time to check each of the sites you listed.
      John
