Top Post of 2011

Today, while I’m preparing a New Year’s Surprise for everyone, I thought you might like to read my top rated post of 2011.  So, here you go:

How Many Calories Are In One Serving of Cafe’ du Monde Beignets?

Last Sunday afternoon, Kathy and I decided to spend some time in the French Quarter.  We parked close to the end of Elysian Fields and walked through the French Market, passing the gator heads, pirated cd’s, funny t-shirts, African sculptures, voodoo dolls, feathery masks, and Cajun food vendors.  We left the market and made our way toward Jackson Square when I saw a familiar site: The world renowned Café’ du Monde, where I have sat many times over the years devouring warm beignets piled high with mountains of powdered sugar.  This time, however, I passed it on by.  I allowed myself to become interested in a silver colored mime and a few self proclaimed acrobats performing near the St. Louis Cathedral and soon forgot all about that sweet warm unforgettable mouth watering life changing awe inspiring delicacy.

There are three beignets in each serving at Café’ du Monde.  I used to hear that Richard Simmons, before he became the famous pink and white short clad fitness guru, used to order six servings at a time.  I know that six servings (18 beignets) are not a healthy choice, but I have been wondering about the nutritional information regarding one serving of Café’ du Monde beignets.  Here’s what I found out from my good friends at fatsecret.com:

Man.  No wonder Richard Simmons got fat before he got thin.  I think I’ll skip the beignets for a while.

I’ve eaten healthy today, but I’m opting to not list my foods until Sunday evening, while I’m working on a surprise for all of my readers.  Make sure to check out my blog on Sunday.

What happened to the blog?

I’m working on a surprise for those who either subscribe to my blog or who are following my weight loss journey.  Don’t worry, I’m still trying to be healthy.  Hopefully, I’ll be ready to unveil the secret on January 1st.

Thanks for reading.

Your Opinion

27 Dec

Last night, I stayed up until 5:15 AM or so helping my parents out on their farm.  I was glad to be able to help them in one way or another.  Before today was over, though, I ended up craving caffeine so I could  stay awake.  So here’s the question, what foods or beverages are there that help you stay awake?  What about the opposite?  What foods or beverages do you know of that help you go to sleep?

Here’s what I had to eat today:

1 boiled egg

1 slice of whole wheat toast

1 ham and turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread

1 serving of pretzels dipped in nutella spread

1 serving of turkey

1 serving of baby carrots

1 serving of black eyed peas

2 chocolate chip cookies

70 oz of water

12 oz or Coca-cola (in order to stay awake)

30 minutes of walking

Quiche, Scones, and Turnip Green Enchiladas

26 Dec

I woke up this morning in Texarkana, Arkansas where Kathy and visited with her mother, her sisters, and their families.  We had an interesting breakfast of Quiche (or “egg pie” as my nephew  called it), Scones (or hard, sweet biscuits as my niece called them), and grilled ham (very good).  After drinking plenty of water, I traveled to my parents home in the country in Arkansas where we visited for a good while.  While there, my sister Mary and her husband Jamie arrived with a dinner of rice, black beans, pork enchiladas, and turnip green enchiladas.  I must admit that I’ve never thought of turnip green enchiladas before, but I have to give them credit for a meal well done.  I also appreciated the fact that they used lowfat ingredients.  Thanks for great meals, everyone.

Here’s what I had to eat today:

2 Servings of Quiche, 4 chocolate chip cookies (so I’m on vacation), 2 slices of ham, 1 apple turnover, 1 scone, 1 serving of black beans, 1 serving of turnip green enchiladas, 1 serving of rice, 1 serving of pork enchiladas, and a handfull of 7 alarm popcorn (way too hot to be enjoyed by anyone normal).

Merry Christmas, Coca-Cola!

26 Dec

Merry Christmas, Coca-Cola

Today, following our Christmas Day Services, Kathy and I loaded up the car and drove to Arkansas for a few days.  Just as we were smack dab in the middle of the Atchafalaya Swamp, I remembered that I had promised myself a Coca-Cola on Christmas Day.  I stopped at the next exit at the Atchafalaya Rest Area, ran to the vending machines and debated on whether or not to purchase a bottle or a can.  I know that you get more in the bottle, but the quality of the Coke is probably more reliable in a can.  And if I’m only going to have one Coke every few months, then I want to make sure that it’s a good one.

Merry Christmas, Coca-Cola!

Here’s what I had to eat today:

1 Special K Protein Meal Bar

2 Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 Servings of Broccoli

1 Red Delicious Apple with Lowfat Peanut Butter

1 Grilled Chicken Sandwich on Whole Wheat Bread

1 Nachitoches Meat Pie

80 oz of water

12 oz of Coca-Cola

Supplements I’ve taken today:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Multi Vitamin

I weighed in this morning on Saturday instead of Friday because of a few commitments yesterday and today.  I was almost certain that I had gained a few lbs because of a couple of Christmas parties and too many Christmas cookies.  However, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I had lost 1 lb.  I now weigh 181.75 which means that I’m only 6.75 lbs away from my goal of 175 lbs.

1 Red Delicious Apple with Lowfat Peanut Butter

1 Salsa Tortilla

2 Servings of Turkey Pepperoni Pizza with Red and Green Peppers and Fat Free Mozzarella

1 Serving of Fat Free Chocolate Pudding
