The Saltiest Drive Through Meal

30 Nov

The Saltiest Drive Through Meal

Tonight at church, we heard from a group who just returned from a mission trip to Comayagua, Honduras.  A couple of years ago, I had an opportunity to travel to Honduras for a week or so.  It was a great week.  But at the end of the week, I ate the saltiest hamburger that I’ve ever had in my life.  It was a McDonald’s Big Mac in the Tegucigalpa Airport.  But after a week of Honduran food, I was glad for a salty taste of America.

This morning, I read an interesting article from Eat This, Not That about the 25 saltiest meals in America.  According to that article, though, McDonald’s does not have the saltiest drive through meal in America.  According to Eat This, Not That, the saltiest drive through meal in America is the Burger King Double Cheese Burger with small fries.  It has the sodium equivalent of 6 Big Grab Bags of Lay’s Potato Chips.  It has 1480 grams of sodium.  If you’re interested, you can find the article at http://eatthis.menshealth.com/slideshow/25-new-saltiest-foods-america#sharetagsfocus?cm_mmc=ETNTNL-_-738478-_-11302011-_-hed.

Here’s what I had to eat today:

1 Biscuit with Grape Jelly

1 Large Taco Salad (no dressing)

1 Chick Fil-A Sandwich

1 Large Grilled Chicken Salad with Mixed Greens, Cucumbers, Brocolli, and Almonds

90 oz of water

Supplements I’ve taken today:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Multi Vitamin

Exercise:

45 Minutes of Walking

34 pushups

Is It Possible to Lose Weight in December?

I’ve been told recently that it’s impossible to keep from gaining weight in December.  I’ve also heard that the best thing to do throughout the holidays is simply try to maintain.  But I wonder if it’s possible to continue to lose weight in December.  I just went through the week of Thanksgiving and still managed to lose 1 lb.  The week before I was on vacation and lost .25 lbs.  I think I’d be happy with maintaining through December, but there’s something in me that says that I can beat the holidays.  What do you think?  Any opinions out there?

Here’s what I had to eat today:

1 Snackwell’s Protein Meal Bar

½ Grapefruit

1 Gala Apple

1 Ham Sandwich on Whole Wheat Sandwich Thins with Fat Free Cheese

1 Special K Protein Meal Bar

2 small Chocolate Chip Cookies

80 oz of water

Supplements I’ve taken today:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Multi Vitamin

Exercise:

40 Minutes of Walking

33 Push-ups

Temptation of the Taco Bell Chocolate Empanada

28 Nov

Temptation of the Taco Bell Chocolate Empanada

Today, I had a lunch meeting at Taco Bell.  As I ordered items from the Fresco (healthier menu – okay except for the Flatbread Sandwich), I noticed that they were really pushing their chocolate empanada.  I used to really enjoy those when they first came out a year or so ago.  In fact, I once ordered two and ate them both.  Once, the clerk jokingly even asked me if I wanted to buy five.  I laughed it off, but now I wonder if it helped serve as a catalyst for me getting to the place where I knew that I needed to take action in order to lose weight.  Man, those chocolate empanadas were good.  I’m sure that they still are.  But today, even though I really wanted one (or two), I resisted.  They sure did look good though.

Here’s what I had to eat today on this Thanksgiving Day:

1 Snackwell’s Protein Meal Bar

1 Serving of Black-Eyed Peas

1 Serving of Sliced Potatoes

1 Serving of Green Beans

1 Serving of Lowfat Blueberry Yogurt with Fresh Blueberries

1 Serving of Tomato Soup

1 Fresco Chicken Soft Taco

1 Fresco Taco

1 Chicken Flatbread Sandwich

80 oz of water

Another Food Incentive

Another Food Incentive

Many of you may remember that after I had lost 25 lbs that I rewarded myself with a burger and fries from the Rivershack Tavern.  Here recently, I’ve been thinking of doing that again once with some other chow down treat once I pass the 40 lb mark.  This past Friday, I weighed in at 186.75 lbs.  Since I started at 226 lbs straight up, that puts me at 39.25 lbs that I’ve lost so far.  Therefore, if I can lose another ¾ of a lb this week, I’ll get my reward.

Now, to figure out what that should be.  Any ideas?  Another burger?  Chicago Style Pizza?  Beignets?  What do you think?

Here’s what I had to eat today on this Thanksgiving Day:

1 Snackwell’s Protein Meal Bar

1 Serving of Black-Eyed Peas

1 Serving of Sliced Potatoes

1 Serving of Green Beans

2 Slices of Whole Wheat Bagel Thins

1 Serving of Strawberry Yogurt with Fresh Blackberries

2 Slices of Thin Crust Pizza with Fat Free Cheese and Turkey Pepperoni, Red and Green Peppers, and Onions

1 Serving of Fat Free Chocolate Pudding

1 Serving of Popcorn

3 Servings of Cavier (Just kidding)

80 oz of water

Supplements I’ve taken today:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Multi Vitamin

Exercise:

30 Minutes on the Elliptical Machine

80 Minutes of Walking with Periodic Lunges

30 Times on the Chest Press Machine

130 Crunches on the Ab Machine

Chocolate Chip Cookies

26 Nov

My wife makes the best chocolate chip cookies that I have ever eaten in my life.  Last night, she made some for me to take tonight to some worship team volunteers.  I hate to admit this, but the team received 4 less cookies than they should have.  They sat in the tupperware container and kept taunting me until I had eaten 4 of them.  I admit it.  I am guilty.  Fortunately, the worship team finished them off.

Here’s what I had to eat today:

1 Snackwell’s Protein Meal Bar

4 Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 Large Grilled Chicken Salad

1 Turkey Sandwich on Whole Wheat Sandwich Thins

1 Serving of Tortilla Chips and Salsa

1 Serving of Lowfat Blueberry Yogurt with Fresh Blueberries

80 oz of water

Exercise:

90 Minutes of Walking

Suggestion:

If you ever get the opportunity to eat one of Kathy’s chocolate chip cookies, eat one.  You won’t be disappointed.

Black Friday Weigh-In

25 Nov

Black Friday Weigh In

This morning I woke up feeling a little fat.  “How terrible,” I said aloud, “to have to weigh in the day after Thanksgiving.”  Slowly, I arose, dressed, and walked to the gym where I weigh in every Friday morning.

I had been told that the best thing to do during vacations and during the holidays is just try to maintain, so I didn’t expect this to be a red-letter day for weight loss.  Especially since yesterday was Thanksgiving.

However, as I weighed, the scale evened out at 186.75, exactly 1 lb lighter than I was last week.  Who would have thought that I could have pigged out on the biggest pig out day of the year and still lose 1 lb.

I was so excited that I ran back to our condo and gave the news to Kathy.

“You make me sick!” was her reply.  “It’s so unfair how much easier it is for guys to lose weight.”

I laughed nervously.  Fortunately, she smiled and started laughing as well.

Here’s what I had to eat today on this Thanksgiving Day:

1 Special K Protein Meal Bar

2 Servings of Mongolian Barbeque

1 Serving of Steamed Pollack

1 Boiled Egg

2 Servings of Mixed Fruit (Grapes, Kiwi, Melon)

1 Serving of Slice Potatoes with Green Peppers

1 Turkey Sandwich on Whole Wheat Sandwich Thins

1 Serving of Tortilla Chips with Salsa

3 medium sized chocolate chip cookies

90 oz of water

Supplements I’ve taken today:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Multi Vitamin

Exercise:

10 Minutes on the Elliptical Machine

50 Minutes of Walking

30 Times on the Chest Press Machine

130 Crunches on the Ab Machine

A Brief History of Thanksgiving

24 Nov

A Brief History of Thanksgiving

In 1789, Congress asked President George Washington to recommend to the nation a day of thanksgiving.  He later issued a proclamation naming Thursday, November 26, 1789 as a Day of Public Thanksgiving.  Other presidents issued several Thanksgiving Proclamations, but the dates and months varied.

In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln Proclaimed that Thanksgiving would be regularly celebrated each year on the last Thursday of November.  This worked well for 70 years.

In 1939, the last Thursday in November fell on the last day of the month, which caused concern for President Franklin D. Roosevelt because it shortened the  Christmas shopping season might dampen the economic recovery.  Therefore, he issued a Proclamation moving Thanksgiving to the second to last Thursday of November.  32 states issued similar proclamations while 16 states refused and kept Thanksgiving as the last Thursday in November, therefore for two years, Thanksgiving Day was celebrated on two separate days of the year.

In 1941, in order to end the confusion, Congress and the President established the official Thanksgiving holiday as the fourth Thursday in November.

Here’s what I had to eat today on this Thanksgiving Day:

1 Snackwell’s Protein Meal Bar

1.5 Servings of Grilled Turkey

1 Serving of Baked Turkey

½ Grapefruit

1 Fried Chicken Thigh

1 Serving of Green Beans

½ Serving of Ham

1 ½ Crescent Rolls

1 Green Salad with Tomatoes

½ Serving of Turnip Greens

80 oz of water

Supplements I’ve taken today:
