9th Weigh In

30 Sep

This morning, I arose a little later than normal and realized that it was time to weigh in.  This was the day when I was going to pass the half way mark towards my weight loss goal of 175.  It was also the day that I was going to see the other side of 200 lbs for the first time in 10 years!

But it didn’t happen.  I did not make it halfway.  I did not get under 200 lbs.  I did not collect $200.

I landed on 201 lbs.  In order to make it to the halfway mark, I would have had to make it to 200.5 lbs.  I missed it by .5 lbs this week.

However, I did lose 1 more lb, which means that I’ve lost 25 lbs altogether.  Hopefully, this next week, I can lose at least .5 lbs and at last pass the halfway mark.

I guess we’ll see.

Here’s what I’ve eaten today:

1 Snackwell’s Protein Bar

1 serving of sushi rolls

1 serving of grilled pork

1 boiled egg

1 serving of grilled chicken

70 oz of water

Conquering the Elliptical

29 Sep

When I started trying to lose weight, I really wanted to love the elliptical machine, but the opposite came true.  I hated it, absolutely hated it.  I couldn’t even stay on one for sixty seconds at the lowest level and elevation.  Tonight, after several weeks of getting in shape, I spent 33 minutes on an elliptical machine.  Even after a cool down, my legs were a little shaky, but it didn’t matter.  I was the victor.

So, is an elliptical machine better than a treadmill or vice versa.  Here’s what I think:

  1. Most elliptical machines allow you to exercise both your arms and legs at the same time.  This allows you for a more complete workout and typically lets you burn more calories per minute.
  2. Elliptical machines seem to be easier on your knees, heels, and hips than are treadmills.  This may depend on your exercise pace.
  3. Elliptical machines allow you to exercise in reverse, which might help you exercise different muscles.  I’ve yet to see a treadmill that runs in reverse.

Here’s what I’ve eaten today:

1 Snackwell’s Protein Bar

2 Servings of Jambalaya

2 Servings of Tossed Salad

2 Cajun Meat Pies

1 serving of dried apples

1 ham and turkey sandwich on whole wheat

9 raisins

87 oz of water

1 Multi Vitamin

The Day After Tomorrow

28 Sep

The Day After Tomorrow

The day after tomorrow, I will weigh once again.

The day after tomorrow, I may once again see the low side of 200.

The day after tomorrow, I may reach the half way mark of losing 51 lbs.

The day after tomorrow, I might celebrate by eating a massive meal and blow everything that I’ve worked toward.

The day after tomorrow will come soon enough.  I’ve got today and tomorrow to deal with first.

Jesus said, “Let the day’s own trouble be enough for the day.”

Good advice.

1 serving of lowfat strawberry yogurt

95 oz of water

Take That, Burger King!

27 Sep

Have you ever really wanted to pig out?  I mean, really, really wanted to pig out?  That was me today.  At lunch, I walked towards Burger King and daydreamed about French Fries with just a touch of salt and loads of ketchup.  As the sign came into view, I could almost smell the Double Whopper with cheese being prepared for me.  Then I read the sign.  It proclaimed, “Free Soft Serve Ice Cream With Purchase of Value Meal.”

I was sold.

I looked at the sign once more, turned to the left, walked into a local grocery store, and purchased a protein bar and an apple.  Soon enough, I forgot all about wanting the burger and fries.  But then I walked back outside the grocery store.  As the scent of burger wafted my way, I grabbed the apple and bit into it harshly.

Take that, Burger King.  I won today.  So there.

Here’s what I’ve eaten today:

2 Special K Protein Bar

1 Red Delicious Apple

4 chicken wings

1 serving of brown rice

2 servings of watermelon

1 boiled egg

1 serving of slice potatoes

1 plain ham sandwich on whole wheat sandwich thins

70 oz of water

The Other Side of 200

26 Sep

The Other Side of 200

My driver’s license indicates that my weight is 200 lbs, but the truth is that I haven’t seen 200 in many years.  It’s been even longer since I’ve seen the other side of 200.  I think it may have been ten years ago, maybe longer.

As of last Friday, I was 202 lbs.  For the last 8 weeks, I’ve lost an average of 3 lbs/week.  Last week, I lost 3 lbs.  I would love to lose 3 lbs this week and end up at 199.

Do you think I can do it?

Here’s what I’ve eaten today:

1 Special K Protein Bar

2 fresco chicken soft tacos (with lettuce and tomato, no cheese)

1 banana

1 medium sized salad (with lettuce, cucumbers, salad toppers, and light ranch dressing)

3 small chicken corn tortilla soft tacos with refried beans, lettuce, tomato, salsa and fat free cheese.

1 serving of blueberry yogurt with fresh blackberries

70 oz of water

Supplements I’ve taken today:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Multi Vitamin

McAlister’s Sweet Tea

25 Sep

Back in 2006, I stopped drinking sodas for the whole year.  I thought that I would instantly lose weight and I did at first, until I replaced them with sweet tea.  One of my favorite sweet teas then was McAlister’s Sweet Tea.  Something about it tastes almost exactly like my own home brewed sweet tea.

Unfortunately for me back in 2006, I didn’t realize that there are 310 calories in a 32 oz glass of McAlister’s Sweet Tea.*  The problem compounded for me because I normally refilled my glass at least once, sometimes twice per visit.  When I wasn’t eating there, I would often stop by for a sweet tea, drinking up the first glass quickly so I could refill it before I left.  So, if I had an average of 64 oz of McAlister’s Sweet Tea each week, I was consuming an extra 4,340 calories.

So that explains why my weight loss didn’t happen in 2006.  I was stupid.

Here’s what I’ve eaten today:

1 Special K Protein Bar

1 BLT on whole wheat bread (no mayo)

2 scrambled eggs

2 servings of mixed fruit (pineapple, green melon, grapes)

2 slices of supreme pizza

78 oz of water

Supplements I’ve taken today:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Multi Vitamin

Exercise:

55 minutes of walking

Sorry, Ladies

24 Sep

When I was meeting with my doctor yesterday, he mentioned to me about how it was easier for a man to lose weight than a woman.  This is something that I’ve heard all of my life, but I wasn’t sure why.  The reasons my doctor told me are also the ones listed by about.com.*

  1. Men have more muscle than women, which allows them to burn more calories.
  2. Women have higher levels of estrogen, a hormone that causes them to keep more fat on their bodies.
  3. Men’s bodies respond more quickly to exercise, while women’s bodies sometimes slow their metabolism, causing them to hang onto fat.
  4. Women have a smaller lung capacity than men, which may cause them to feel like they are working harder than men when the exercise levels are actually the same.

Sorry, ladies.  I know it’s not fair.  It makes me have even more respect for you, because most of the time you are in far better shape than men.

Here’s what I’ve eaten today:

2 scrambled eggs

1 serving of low fat strawberry/banana yogurt

½ banana

1 serving of pork tenderloin

1 serving of green beans

1 dinner roll

1 Chick Fil-A sandwich

70 oz of water

Supplements I’ve taken today:

1 Fish Oil Pill

1 Multi Vitamin

Exercise:

32 minutes of walking
